Fair warning: the rest of this post will contain spoilers. If you are currently watching Weeds or intend to in the near future, know that you will read potentially unwanted spoilers. Also, if you've never heard of/never seen this show, the rest of this post probably won't make a ton of sense. At all. But go ahead and read anyway if you like.
Anyway. In reflection of the 8 seasons of the show, which I spent the better part of probably a month binge-watching on Netflix, I have to say that one of my favorite elements of the show (especially in the post-Agrestic seasons) was the Andy and Nancy unrequited love/will-they-or-won't-they thing. In the earlier seasons, I disliked the idea of the two being together, since they were sort of in-laws even though Nancy's husband/Andy's brother dies before the show starts, thus prompting Nancy to enter the pot business. It felt kind of awkward and to a degree incestuous to give Andy and Nancy a romantic connection, even if they weren't biologically related.
But later, I started to warm up to the idea of "Bill Sussman" and "Laci LaPlante" living happily-ever-after. I saw Andy's love for Nancy grow stronger as the show progressed, and I noticed that it mirrored the unrequited love that I have faced, that the people in my life that I love and care about most have dealt with. I wanted nothing more than for Andy to be with Nancy, because I realized that I've been in his shoes before --perhaps we all have-- and I never want a person (fictional or in real life) to feel the pain that I've felt when being hopelessly in love with someone who just doesn't feel the same. And it was so clear that he loved her dearly: after she was hospitalized from being shot in the head, Andy begged for her room to have greater security out of fear that the attempted assassin would try to kill her again. He assumed fatherhood of Stevie when Esteban and Nancy were broken up and she needed someone to sign the birth certificate as the father, and willingly gave his parental rights (and his blessing) away when Nancy and Esteban got married. Besides, I also hated Nancy's two prior husbands, one a DEA agent who was kind of a jerk, and the other a Mexican drug kingpin who was ultra-controlling and yeah.
And so, when I watched the series finale late one night on Netflix recently, I was initially disappointed that Andy and Nancy failed to ever get together. Sure, they kissed on various occasions throughout the series, and hooked up right at the spot where Judah died right before the finale, but they didn't end up together. Andy went back to Ren Mar, to his 3-year-old daughter he parents with a female friend of his, Nancy stayed in Connecticut and granted Stevie's wish to go to boarding school. But after some thought, I realized that this is a good thing that they never ended up together. It's okay that Andy and Nancy never became super romantically involved.
Because this ending gives me hope. Andy got over Nancy, struck out on his own, and was happy. In the end, he didn't need to be with Nancy to be a happy, fulfilled person.
Currently, I'm sort of in an Andy state: being in love with someone despite the fact that he does not feel the same. But the end of Andy's story gives me hope that I will someday be okay with the fact that the guy I have my heart set on doesn't love me back. Someday, I hope to be totally free of all the things that keep me from being happy.
I'm not really sure if any of that post made sense to anyone (regardless of one's familiarity with Weeds), but whatever. Now I have to continue my state of Orange is the New Black withdrawal, or find something new to binge-watch on Netflix.
