The Fangirlingest Video Ever

So lately I've been really obsessed with this web series called Squaresville. It stars Mary Kate Wiles (who played Lydia in The Lizzie Bennet Diaries), and I think Squaresville would be the result if you combined Daria, Freaks and Geeks, and My So-Called Life into one, single, wonderful super-show and set it in modern times as a web series instead of a 90s TV show.

Anyway, I just watched this one video that they did that premiered in March of 2013. It had nothing to do with the plot really, but instead imagined the three main characters --Zelda, Esther, and Percy-- cosplaying from a variety of fandoms.

I died of fangirling. Of the fandoms and pop culture things that I recognized, they covered Sherlock, Harry Potter, Doctor Who, Annie Hall, and Daria. I positively loved watching the dorky-but-lovable-and-completely-not-Trent character Percy try and pull off Trent Lane, and seeing Zelda try and pull off the classic Annie Hall get-up that everyone who's ever seen Woody Allen's movies will recognize (I haven't even seen Annie Hall, but I totes got the reference). But they didn't just do my fandoms/interests. They also covered Star Trek, Bob Ross, The Guild, and Adventure Time.

If you want to watch the video, check out this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k29dEB_Te18&index=23&list=PLV3PKFMw-6itQQ4V9sbYA9k7yF0LJt1GO

I totes recommend Squaresville, by the way. It's really well-done and I just love it. Aside from the cosplay episode, the episodes they do are really good, and I'm super addicted to it. It's like when I watched The Lizzie Bennet Diaries in four days last summer.

So...yeah. I just got really excited just now over this. That is all.

Great Women of YouTube: Carrie, Laci, Beckie, Vi, & Lizzie

I present to you a collection of my favorite YouTube channels that star women!

  • Carrie Hope Fletcher: She's British with the best curly hair ever! She is a total theatre/book nerd, is super sweet and relatable, and I just love her. One of my favorite channels of all time. Her videos are usually about whatever is going on in her own life, or just about life in general. She also points out plot holes in Brothers Grimm fairy tales and has an incredible song about how boys in books are always better (which, let's be honest...they are). Recommended videos include "Socially Unacceptable Sneezes", "Finish Fewer Books", and "Cringeworthy."
  • Laci Green: Creator and star of a series called Sex+, an informational web series covering topics such as sexuality, sexual health, body image, relationships, and feminism. I love her work because she's honest, un-biased, and works to clear up common misconceptions about sex, gender, and feminism --three qualities that every sex educator should strive to live up to. Recommended videos include "Why I'm a Feminist", "Elliot Rodger: More Than a Madman", and "Transgender Adventure."
  • Rebecca "Beckie" Brown: Probably one of the sweetest people on YouTube! Her videos cover a variety of topics, including trichotillomania, a hair-pulling disorder that she and many other people (myself included) deal with. She also loves cats (meow), has an amazing British accent, is super adorable, and has made an incredibly powerful Draw My Life video posted on the home page of her channel. If you watch none of her other videos, at least watch that one. Recommended videos (apart from the Draw My Life) include "Firsts", "Exam Stress + Help", "Ticking In My Own Time", and "Trichotillomania."
  • Vi Hart: Quirky, witty, and talented. Vi Hart's videos are all about math, but if you only sort of like math (the way I did when I started watching her videos), do not let that turn you off from her!!!! She presents math in a really cool way, and the math she teaches is never dull. Recommended videos is the entire Hexaflexagon playlist, her proof that some infinities really are bigger than other infinities (in prep for the Fault in Our Stars movie), every Pi Day video she's ever made, and her proof that 0.999... actually equals 1. She also does really cool stuff with music, so even if you're more of a music person than a math nerd, she's still worth checking out.
  • Lizzie Bennet: Okay, so she may be a fictional character in the Hank Green/Bernie Su web series The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, which is a modernization on the Jane Austen novel Pride and Prejudice, but the show is presented as a vlog that Elizabeth "Lizzie" Bennet creates and stars in. The show's title characters are funny, intelligent, and very down-to-earth, which makes the show engaging, easy to relate to, and difficult to stop watching. Recommended videos include the entire series.

Of course, these five are not the only awesome female YouTubers, and there are plenty of other great channels that are created by and star awesome women! I'll continue to scope out and spread word of other great internet women!
